However, Newton Heath was at severe risk of bankruptcy, so Stafford eventually gave in and the dog became Davies's dog, just in time for his daughter's 12th birthday. As a result, Davies became interested in Newton Heath's financial plight and together with four other investors, including Stafford, he rescued the club from bankruptcy and became its new chairman.
