When I first became a people manager, I eagerly devoured many management books and articles to try and learn "management". Most were useless, but one that has consistently influenced me in both work and life over the past two decades is "Who's Got the Monkey?" Absolute classic, and a delight to read and re-read. Turns out it's one of HBR's two best-selling articles ever. And for good reason.

My philosophy ever since has been to transfer monkeys to the right people ASAP (keeping in mind Andy Grove's task-relevant maturity framework), ensure these people know these monkeys are theirs (clarity of goals), and help / advise / coach them on how to care and feed for their monkeys (delegation does not equal abdication).

• Recognition

But these "if, then" traps are a dangerous mirage:

If you convince yourself that your satisfaction is contingent upon the next achievement or milestone, you'll never find it.
