Here’s how and WHY:

Look.

I’m not the best copywriter. Or product-launcher. And far from being the best product builder.

But if there’s one thing I believe I’ve nailed…

Is how to sell BEFORE you build.
Here’s how and WHY:

3 years ago I participated in a cohort (group coaching).

It was amazing.
I loved it.

But the product creator had a dirty secret which she shared with us only on the last call.

She SOLD the cohort BEFORE she built it.

She explained how.
And I followed her footsteps:

There are 3 steps to this.

1. Know A LITTLE bit about your audience:

Have a general understanding of what your audience wants.

Now this is counter-intuitive to what most copywriters will tell you.

I get that.

But hear me out…

2. Have a LITTLE understanding of a structure of a cohort.

Participate in one.
Or ask someone whose been in one.

• How many calls?
• What time intervals between calls?
• What happens while they’re not on a call?
• Q&As - when?

Got that?
Good.

3. Use your experience.

Instead of offering your audience BENEFITS (which you might not understand yet)…

Offer YOURSELF.

• Your experience
• Your information
• Your results.

And that’s it for the prep stage.

Here’s what you do:

You understand that you’ll convert less.

That’s a given.
You don’t yet fully understand your audience.

But you have a vague idea of these 3 facts:

• They want what you have
• You know what a cohort looks like 
• You have a collection of YOUR experiences.

Yes? Then…

You build a sales page with the understanding:

You will NOT be able to convert as many people as you’d like.

And that’s okay.
Accept that fact.

Then build a sales page that’s AROUND YOU. Not THEM.

Yes. I know. Counter-intuitive. I know. Hear me out:

Some people will buy simply because they’re impulse buyers.

Others will buy because they trust you.

And more people will buy because they want your expertise.

Yes?
So you’d convert SOME of your list/audience.

Some.
Not a lot.

And here’s what happens next…

You build ONE live call beforehand.

The introduction.
The small part of the first call.

Then…

You announce:

“I want to hear what you’re struggling with so that I can give you the best value I can.”

And that’s it.
Let them speak.

Or…

Present the first call as a Q&A.

Introduce yourself and the cohort. And then let them ask questions.

And shut up.

Let them speak.

Hear them out.
Record.
Write down.

They’ll give you EVERYTHING you need to build out the rest of the cohort.

And…

If done right and with confidence?

Nobody will ever notice.

But…
I’m a big believer in transparency.

And that’s how I launched my first cohort.

The sales message was “this is beta and that’s why the price is low.”

Got 100+ applications.
Chose 10. Ran the cohort.

One rule:

Know thyself.

Are you confident? Can you build content QUICKLY?

No?

Don’t do two calls per week.
Do one per week. Or less.

Give yourself time to prepare for the next call without stressing out.

This will not work for everyone.
Don’t do this unless:

• You can handle some pressure
• Your an EXPERT
• You’re confident
• You’re not afraid to frick up.

Don’t do this unless you have all four. But if you do…

Let me tell you why this is the best thing you’ll ever do for your business:

1. Quick execution
2. Eliminate procrastination
3. Kill your perfectionism…

And more importantly…

4. Start selling
5. Understand your audience
6. Make some money…

And even more importantly…

Why do car manufacturers still design UGLY cars?

Why not make ALL of their cars look good?

The reason is they’re the best copythinkers in the business.

They’re using one of the biggest emotions in marketing to their advantage.

Today’s story starts almost 3 years ago.

I was writing a sales page that was gonna sell an Instagram growth course.

And I was stuck.

I didn’t know which main emotion to use.

My best idea was to use jealousy as the big emotion.

Why?

Because the target audience I was targeting was business women.

And they were jealous.

Jealous of the Kale-eating-skinny-models who uploaded half-naked photos to IG and grew a huge audience overnight.

But my biz partner didn’t agree.

He said there’s one stronger emotion:

Status.

He said…

Business women care more about status than anything else.

They wanted to prove they’re good enough.

• To their spouse.
• Their family.
• Their friends.

And how do you prove that? Even better than money…

Social status.

What is social status?

For men it could be a nice Rolex.

For these business women? It was a big Instagram account.

I agreed. It made sense.
So we used that as the main emotion.

The sales page made $6,000 in profit on day one.

He was right.

But why am I telling you this?

Yesterday I asked you guys why car manufacturers still make ugly cars.

Why don’t all their cars look good?

Think about it.
It’s not difficult to change the shape. To make it nicer.

So the answer…
As you’ve probably guessed already…

Is STATUS.
But why?

It’s because if all the cars look the same…

All nice…

Why would anyone buy the more expensive cars?

“For the NEED FOR SPEED” you could answer.

And you wouldn’t be wrong. But…

The best answer is status.

Men (especially) care about their social status.

It’s in our DNA.
From the Stone Age.

Social status = Alpha male = Tribe leader = Get the beautiful females.

That’s how it was.
And our brain is still wired the same way.

So then…

If a $20k car looks the same as a $200k car…

Why would someone buy the $200k one?

He wouldn’t.
Because then his status wouldn’t shine as brightly.

Makes sense?

But there’s one more question.
A more important question:

How do you do the same thing online…

How do you position a product (or a line of products) to convey social status?

Because if you do…
You win the game.

And here’s the answer to this question:

The answer is…

I wanna hear your answers.

An offline pet store owner asked me how to market his store.

I shared 4 tips with him:

1. Borrow authority
2. Use bait
3. Open the wallet
4. Personalize.

Here’s how:

Here’s the story.

I have a dog.
Just moved to a new apartment…

And wanted to found a cool pet store to buy some food for the doggy 🐕 .

On the way to the new office I stumbled upon a pet store.

Walked in…

And met the owner.
We started talking… like I do…

Then…

He heard I do marketing.

And started spilling his guts. It was his dad’s store and now he took over.

The store is located on a crowded street. Literally 10,000 people walk through every single day. But…

Only a couple dozen walk in.

He wanted to fix that.
So he asked me…

I walked around a bit…

Saw that he had a big sign outside. One he was using poorly.

Had a generic message written on it. Something like “Get your favorite pet’s food here. Walk in…”

Just like everyone else. Right?

So here’s what I told him.
Step-by-step:

1. Borrow authority.

Go and find which pet food is trying to get branding RIGHT NOW.

Who’s spending a ton on TV commercials right now?

Who’s trying to get their name out there?

Find them.
And tell them this:

“Let me sell your food in my store. But there’s one condition:

You have to give me small sample packages to give out for free.”

Not a difficult task as every company wants to get your dogs hooked on their specific food.

Kinda like drugs.

Ok. Found one?
Cool.

Then move to step two.

2. Use bait.

Have a big photo of the brand’s name on your sign outside.

People are seeing them on TV right now so it’s fresh in their minds.

But also…

Have text on the sign that says “free sample inside with no strings attached.”

Good. Then…

3. Instruct your employees to sell something with the sample.

Something super cheap. A dollar or less.

Instruct them to say “you can get this (item) for $1 only when you get the free sample”.

No pushing.
Just comfortably say it.

Why should he do that?

Because very few people will pay $1 and leave the store.

The moment their wallet is already open…

They’ll look around and go “oh now that I think about it? I also need this…”

Good.

We’re upselling.
And it’s easy to upsell once the wallet is open.

Then…

4. Personalize.

While the buyer is looking around… ask them a couple of friendly questions.

Create a connection.
Be interested. Let them talk about their favorite thing in the world. Their pet.

This is easy.

But why do you do that?

It’s because then you can offer more and more products.

“Oh this (item) is perfect for a chihuahua. Especially now in the winter. Did you know that your dog is freezing at night? You probably saw how it’s shivering…”

Now that you got all the steps in…
Bonus step:

5. Collect their data.

Email.
Phone number.
Whatever.

Do whatever you can to get that info. Offer something for free in exchange if needed.

Bribe ‘em.

And then add them to a mailing list and segment according to dog type/food/etc.

Then…

You can keep marketing to them. Making them come again and again.

But also…

Give them discounts for referrals.

This way you could quite literally make each person spend $1,000/yr AND refer 10 more to do the same.

But there’s more.
Another bonus step:

6. Affiliate offers.

Partner up with the local vet.
The local pet grooming service.

Bump up your revenue by marketing them too.

And that’s how you turn a nobody-knows-about-you business…

Into the local go-to giant.

Easy.
Isn’t it?

You can do the same with ANY business.

1. Do you focus on copywriting or offer creation?

The market you’re selling in is more important than the offer which is more important than the way you sell it.

Market > Offer > Copywriting.

2. Have you tried to sell prevention?

The best thing to sell is a painkiller (burning problem). Not a vitamin (prevention). Solve a problem that’s urgent Now. If possible.

3. Have you not built enough proof?

Proof is more important than good copywriting. If you’re solving a burning pain problem and people don’t buy it’s because they don’t believe you.

4. Ever tried to sound smart?

Good copywriting does not equal clever copywriting. It’s in fact the opposite in most cases.

Clarity > Cleverness

5. Had small CTA buttons on your sales/landing pages?

Have a clear and big call to action. Make it stand out. People often can not find it and therefore don’t buy.

6. Never checked your site/page speed?

Sites that load slowly do not sell. People have a limited attention span and will leave before it loads if it takes too long.

7. Have you not addressed the risk?

A good guarantee will do more for you than editing and re-editing the sales message for hours. Reverse the risk. Make it a no-brainer.

8. Tried to sell only the core of the product?

Use stacking. Add bonuses and extra materials/services to increase the perceived value of your offer. Value = Perceived value = stacking.

9. Didn't give people a good reason to buy NOW?

Urgency and scarcity are crucial. People who want to buy often need that little kick in the butt to take action NOW.

10. Ever thought like you need to hard sell?

Don’t sell whenever possible. What you want to do is make the prospect TRY what you’re selling. Therefore frame the closing pitch as a trial. Not a definite sale.

11. Ever tried to optimize something with no context?

What happens before the click matters. The sale starts before the person clicks the link in the email or ad. A good sales page won’t sell with a bad ad or email.

12. Have you tried building a one-product funnel?

The money is made in the back-end with 90% or more of every single ad you see online. Make sure to have upsells and retargeting/email marketing set up.

13. Missed the step to making even more money?

Even more money is made with a community. Communities are the fuel that keeps the group running and keeps you top-of-mind for your next sale.

14. Have you tried going with fluff motivation?

Find the below-the-surface motivation for someone to buy. People don’t buy diet products to lose weight. 

They buy them because they feel bad. Or want to attract a partner. Or are afraid to die. Find and use the real motivation.

15. Didn't know when to niche down?

Always try to niche down when selling a high-ticket product. Always try to go as broad as possible when selling a low-ticket product. 

Unless the goal of the low-ticket is to get people in the door for the high-ticket.

16. Didn't understand why your low-ticket product stopped selling?

Tripwire products (low-ticket - first sale) are like socks. They stop being functional (people stop buying) and then you replace them. 

The goal is to get people in the door to sell them your “hero product”.

17. Tried to model and sell something everyone else is?

New is always better. A new product or angle or framing will always sell better as long as it’s done right. Jump on opportunities to innovate. Always.

18. Didn't think of HOW people consume your sales message?

Design and formatting matter. People can’t read a black-and-white paragraph that’s never-ending. 

But if the design is too good then people will look at it and forget about reading. Design is there to support the copy.

19. Focused on branding and awareness?

The best place to play the marketing game is an impulse buy. 

If you can sell a product that’s an impulse buy you can ignore “branding” and “awareness” altogether in the beginning. Therefore you don’t have to raise money.

20. Asked mom for advice?

The best way to get good at marketing is to learn the basics and then ruthlessly practice in the real world. Not on drafts. 

The market will tell you how good you are. Not your friends or mom. If you wanna progress faster then get a mentor.

21. Tried to do it all on your own?

Network. You always need other professionals like developers and designers to support your marketing efforts. Otherwise you’ll get stuck.

22. Waited to finalize the product before launching?

Sell before you build. Even if you don’t have the product yet. Refund if needed. Then build. Only after you’ve been able to establish a proof of concept.

23. Didn't check for competitors?

Your competitors are the best market research tool you have. They’ve gone through all the trouble. Study them. There’s usually a good reason as to why they’re doing what they’re doing.

24. Thought you were a business person?

Marketers think they’re business people. They’re not. Being able to market a product and building a business are two different skills.

25. Felt like you can't learn a skill you needed?

You can learn any new marketing skill within a week. Buy 3-5 of the best books on the topic and you’ll have most of the info you need. 

Or you can pay for a consultation call to shorten the learning curve.

26. Ever tried using formulas?

Formulas are the death of any marketer. They switch your attention from THINKING to filling in the blanks.

No good marketing campaign was ever built by filling-in-the-blank. Ever.

First let me tell you how I wouldn’t market it…

The way everyone else does:

“We’re the best design agency that’ll increase your conversions to the moon.”

Yuck 🤢 

But why not?

Well…
Here’s why:

Marketing an unsexy service with a direct claim…

That overpromises results…

Will only work on unaware clients. Small businesses. Or dumb businesses.

Usually.

The problem?
They’re difficult clients who can’t pay much.

So far makes sense?

But it gets better:

But you’re not allowed to connect it to a direct ROI or any money talk.

I want you to learn how to think.

Not just slap on a hook we have all seen a million times…

With an over-the-top stupid claim…
Getting the promotion to flop.

So…

How would I market such a service?

My thinking process would have 3 steps in it.

Here they are:

1. Identify a HIGH-quality client who might need my work.

A SPECIFIC client.

You see…
I don’t wanna sell web-design.

I don’t wanna compete with huge agencies with a metric ton of social proof.

No.

I want to carve my own sub-niche.

Here’s how:

Think: who’s a specific client that could benefit from my service?

Here’s one I’d choose:
Copywriters.

They need web design. But…

They need specific web design. Tailored to their specific needs.

Speaking in their own language.

Which leads us to the next step.

2. Study their EXISTING beliefs.

That’s easy.
Just follow a couple of copywriting accounts on any social media.

See what they believe in.
See what they don’t believe in.

And then…

Play INTO their beliefs.
Connect your service with their beliefs.

How?

3. Inflate their ego while positioning your service as secondary.

Secondary…

But CRUCIAL for their PRIMARY skill.

Are you confused?
Let me show you exactly how I’d do it.

Step-by-step:

Service: web design.
Target client: copywriters.
Their beliefs: WORDS convert. NOT design.

Their primary skill: writing words.
My skill: design.

Let’s connect it all:

My design will help your words convert.

BOOM!

We use THEIR beliefs to inflate THEIR ego by providing our SECONDARY skill.

So how do you turn this into a hook or an offer?

Easy.

But remember our handicap:
NO conversion rate talk.

Remember?

So here’s the hook/offer idea:

Your words make people buy.
But…

Do your readers READ your words?
Some do. Some don’t. Right?

That’s because words can’t make them read more words.

But design can.

Introducing: the ONLY design agency that uses MINIMALISTIC design that gets your words read.

Now.

How do you turn that into an offer?
Simple.

A claim + guarantee.

…

We’ll make your visitors read AT LEAST 20% more of your sales page or your money back.

See why that’s smart?
Here’s why:

You’re targeting people with money.

High-quality clients.

And you’ve tailored an offer SPECIFICALLY for them.

But the best part?
You’re not making over-the-top money claims.

Like all the other “spammers” are.

Instead?
You let them IMAGINE:

A 20% increase of average read could potentially lead to a 20% increase in conversions.

But…

That might not be the case.

So instead of hand-cuffing yourself to a monetary deal where you might lose…

You’re offering a deal where you can only win. If you’re good.

Makes sense?

And the best part:

We didn’t say a single word about conversions.

Or money.

Now.
You can do the same process in any market. Any niche. With any service.

And that’s the point.
