I'm starting a weekly column with advice, observations, and inspiration for engineering managers and senior engineers. You can expect similar - but more frequent - content than what I write on The Pragmatic Engineer. Kicking off next week: sign up here: t.co/SLe64y6YsX

I spent $5,000 to advertise my book, Building Mobile Apps at Scale on my favorite iOS & Android sites/newsletters. I collected all stats and shared it with these platforms after. Most of the sites/newsletters said they never saw this type of "competitive" data before: t.co/DheNyE1IVJ

OnlyFans (an adult site) shutting down adult content because MasterCard and Visa will no longer allow such transactions should be the crypto moment. There's a need (payments at scale) & a market (billions of dollars). If crypto won't make the mainstream jump now, when would it?

It's been over a year since Uber laid off about 20% of it's engineering organization. In my observation, the layoffs - and how they were done - were one of the biggest mistake the company did: and something other tech companies should learn from. Thread with my observations.

An engineering manager archetype that goes unrecognised at most companies, though critical to success: the amazing frontline manager who does *not* want to become a manager of managers. There is no career track for these people I know of at small & large places. A huge miss.

Everyone is struggling to hire software engineers with *some* experience. I've talked with dozens of candidates landing a new job, and companies who are still hiring successfully. Here's what companies who are still hiring in this very hot market are doing (thread):

TechPays EU is still very much in alpha. I've only processed about a quarter of Netherlands data submitted (other countries will follow, beta launch will be NL), but it's already showing that there are plenty of places paying *really* well. Thanks for everyone submitting data! t.co/SAVX21ksli

"Take-home assignments, pair-programming tests, and the like are biased and, frankly, insulting to senior engineers like me. I have an impressive resume and great references: I shouldn't need to go through any of these. What do you think?" Dude, that would make it more biased.

While EU companies are pondering if €80K/year for a senior engineer is too much or not, more (US) VC-funded ones are starting to offer €120K ($140-150K) and up *plus* equity for seniors in Europe. Here’s an example with @RevenueCat, who pay location independent. t.co/bQJTd3p4ix

A reminder that it is a *very* hot market for software engineers with a few years experience... and especially for senior and above engineers. This is not just for the UK, but most places from Brazil through US and EU to India. If you're on the fence: it's a great time to look. t.co/QZFc2h5C0m
