How are projects typically executed in larger companies? Most of Big Tech lets teams choose how they work. Here's what I've gathered through both a survey and talking with people. (Please feel free to message if incorrect. Share details here as well: t.co/OoioLP3xRK) t.co/1pZWSkRP4n

The tech hiring market has never been this hot: not even during the Dotcom Boom. I talked with dozens of tech hiring managers (from managers to CTOs), swarms of people switching jobs to answer: Why this is happening, and what are companies doing who keep growing? A thread: t.co/jCMKp2jeXw

What are Platform teams, why are they important, and why do (almost) all high-growth companies and big tech have them? A thread. 1. The easiest way to visualize Platform teams is blocks of specific types. Other teams (called Product/Program) use these "blocks" to build. t.co/juBQLrskc6

Interesting responses so far. - Big tech & high-growth unicorns tend to give autonomy on project management. Eng usually runs projects. Scrum absent, kanban sometimes used. - Startups mandating Scrum with dedicated project managers seem to have the lowest satisfaction ratings. t.co/dNPn3jcIpy t.co/9FhM7UnoqM

What does the future of mobile engineering look like? What engineering practices will it take to keep "winning" in mobile? Been thinking about this for a *long* time. An thread: 1. The biggest problem mobile teams have: shipping with confidence. Why? Because it takes. So. Long. t.co/3ZX5SFIGtS

“These kids earn $30K/month mining crypto” - headline … after their investment banker father took out a loan of $230-280K to buy graphics cards … plus paying $3K/month for electricity (“we want to be environmentally friendly” made me cringe) Inspiring story right there. t.co/p5q3Jjgjex

Onboarding to a new company as a software engineer/manager: what are approaches that helped *you* do this faster for small companies and bigger ones? (not talking about what companies could do better: there are, admittedly, a lot) I'll start:

I'm starting a weekly, paid newsletter I wish I had access to: going deep in topics relevant for engineering managers and senior engineers. When I worked at Uber, I missed having a regular publication to read that would resonate with me. The first issue is out today (1/5): t.co/ZqWl7HfDJo

Interesting observation on mentoring: mentorship for software engineers/managers often works really well with a mentor who is a few years "ahead" of them, or a level "above" them. Someone who still has fresh enough memories to place themselves in the shoes of their mentee.
