Did you know that every time you take a picture with your phone or digital camera, the exact location of that photo is recorded onto the image itself?

That data stays with the photo when you post it on social media or even email it to friends. This means that fans, hackers, or law enforcement can intercept your location information and use it for nefarious purposes.

The data, known as "EXIF", includes the date and time the photo was taken, the brand and model of the device, as well as location and camera settings. The scary part is that it's often enabled automatically on our devices.

So, anyone with basic knowledge of metadata can easily extract this information from an image.

But don't worry; there are ways to remove metadata from your content! Here's how I do it and how you can, too!

The easiest way I've found to MASS remove metadata from a batch of photos is using the EXIF Metadata app.($4.99/year)

This app removes the metadata, saves copies to your iPhone album, & deletes the originals that have sensitive info.

Free alternative: Location metadata on iPhone specifically can only be collected if you give access to location services in your camera app. You can turn that off completely by:

Opening Settings app, > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera, then tap Never.

Free alternative: If you want to do the same thing for a single photo or video on Android:

Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner > choose the Remove EXIF option. Tap the metadata you want to delete. Tap the Save icon to save your changes.
