A close friend recently complimented me about how I'm never afraid to "ask for what I want" in business. 

It got me thinking about how I became that way - because it wasn't always the case.. 

And I developed this:

Step 1: Give yourself a reality check

Your options are:

A) Ask for what you want out of the situation, deal, or circumstance. Or..
B) Don't. 

Option A might get you what you want, and option B is guaranteed not to.. I like my odds better with option A. You should too. https://t.co/aILcBYRJZw

Step 2: You don't have to deserve it to get it.

Most people don't ask for what they want because we all at some level struggle to feel 'good enough' or believe we're deserving of things. Fun fact, you don't have to deserve the outcome. You can get it anyway.

Spoiler alert: What you 'deserve' is completely objective. And whoever it is in your life you're worrying about 'thinks' you deserve it or not - doesn't fucking matter. It's your life. 

Take the shot or lose the chance.

Step 3: Six degrees of separation is real. 

"Six Degrees of Separation" is a theory that suggests every person on this planet is connected to another person through a chain of 5 acquaintances. Essentially, any 2 people are just 6 or fewer social connections away from each other.

This is why networking is so powerful. And why it's not "what you know" but rather "who you know". For that reason, I will always ask people for introductions to others.

And when I'm asking for what I want from one person, even if they can't give it to me - they may know someone who can. 

But you won't know.. unless you ask.

Step 4: 5 second rule (Mel Robins)

Sorry to bring another Mel into this but, the 5-second rule is essentially where you count backward (5, 4, 3, 2, 1 🚀) before you do the 'scary thing'. Before you introduce yourself to a stranger, speak publicly, or.. ASK for what you want.

This has genuinely changed my life. The countdown forces me to do the thing I'm scared of - and because I do it, and the outcomes are good, it provides me evidence that I was right to make the ask. That gives you confidence over time to ask for even bigger things.

Step 5: Recieve.

Whatever the answer is, if you get what you want, or if you don't - receive it gracefully. Even if (and when) it's a "No" - you can simply smile and say, 

"Well, I had to at least ask" 🤷🏼‍♀️

"No's" are going to happen. The faster you start racking 'em up, the faster you get "yes's" 😎
