Why do large companies do planning once, max twice a year? Because doing a proper and non-rushed top-down-meets-bottoms-up planning typically takes 2.5 months from the start, in an company with several organizations, each orgs having many teams: t.co/Iy5Ymy9cAC

Common take: “Wow, the opposite of agile.” These companies don’t optimise for “Agile”, they optimise for: 1. Responding to market changes 2. Updating their strategy as per #1 3. Autonomy & empowerment: all teams (and engineers!) have a say 4. Align everyone for the same goals

And, to be clear, when you’re a small team or company, you don’t need the above process to succeed. When you start to grow above 50 ppl, multiple divisions (eg engineering, marketing, ops, finance etc), you need to have a way to help large groups work towards the same goal.
