I’m not surprised the least. Uber has always been pragmatic in buying the best hardware money can buy - especially when that hardware means much faster (mobile) compile times. t.co/duC1Pzovow t.co/YUH19Aadmv

As to how Uber/Shopify makes this happen so fast: The Developer Experience/Platform team usually benchmarks build times on new machines. Calculates how much time a new $3,000 machine saves over 2 years per eng, and what the “cost” of that eng time is. A no-brainier every time.

Plus, technically, the ROI doesn’t really need to be on the $3,000 machine, but on the additional $1,000-1,500 it costs more than the basic version. This is a technicality but the ROI is even bigger. And you’ve not thrown in morale and bragging rights like the quoted tweet.
