I never considered this explicitly before, but of the four groups described in "The Four Quadrants of Conformism" (t.co/aw0NX55P7N), I only write for the two on the right. I'm happy if conventional-minded people find my essays useful, but I don't expect them to.
This wasn't a conscious strategy (obviously, if I only realized it now), but I wouldn't change anything. A good essay should be surprising (t.co/HdUSjFaoxT), so the independent-minded are the medium's natural audience.
