Getting to a good future is much easier if wanting and liking are orthogonal, using different circuitry. Luckily it turns out they are

The wireheading fear implicitly assumes they’re tied together. It says you can’t feel great without getting stuck in a hole. But reliable consistent crashless pleasure is not only possible, it’s anti-addictive, it cures through surplus the pleasure addiction we’re all born with

The end result is that you’re less wireheaded — addicted to the metaphorical pleasure wire — than you started out

Unfortunately the only tools I know of that reliably hit liking but not wanting take a lot of meditative practice. The drugs we have today won’t work. But we can build new technology that democratizes what today takes tons of practice
