GST has been a boon for North East, says FM Sitharaman The Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, has said that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been a boon for the North East.

She said that the region has witnessed a 27.5% growth in GST revenue and the taxpayer base has increased from 1 lakh to 3.45 lakh in the last few years.

Sitharaman also credited the former Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, for his contribution in the implementation of GST. She said that Jaitley's vision of a "One Nation, One Tax" regime has been realized under the GST.

Sitharaman directs CBIC to equip the remaining land customs stations in NE with EDI by December Sitharaman also highlighted the importance of Customs in the North East, which has a land boundary of over 5,000 kilometres with four neighbouring countries.

She directed the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to equip the remaining 10 land customs stations in the region with Customs Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems by December 2023.
