While fake billing scams unearthed by the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) department in Gujarat have cost the exchequer Rs 4,266 crore, officials have managed to recover just 3.5% of the sum evaded, according to data tabled in Parliament by the Union ministry of finance.

Six years after the new tax regime was rolled out, such losses have been massive despite several policy changes.

Gujarat ranks fourth in terms of the number of fake billing cases detected between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2023, the six years that GST has been in effect.

Some 570 cases were registered by the CGST department for fake billing scams in Gujarat, which involved cumulative evasion of Rs 2,902 crore.
