You can learn everything you need to know about a person by observing: (1) How they treat waiters (2) Whether they put their shopping cart away in a parking lot
If someone is disrespectful or dismissive to service workers, I can basically guarantee they’re not a cool person.
I’ve literally never found an exception to this rule: How you treat service workers is a simple signal of whether or not you are a kind and decent person. Whether you put your shopping cart away is a simple signal of whether you take ownership of your shit.
I remember there were always a few kids in Little League whose parents would carry their bags into the game for them. I asked my Dad to carry mine once and he stared at me and laughed. Told me that I had to learn to take ownership for my stuff. Carrying it was part of that.

Before a company makes a key C-suite hire, they should have a test in which they observe the person in a few situations where they encounter service workers (drivers, janitors, waiters). You’d learn more about them as a leader by how they treat these people than any interview.
This isn’t to say that there aren’t rich/successful people who break this rule. Sadly, there are—probably MANY. But it is to say that those people definitely aren’t cool and I wouldn’t want to get a beer with them. Everyone probably talks trash behind their backs, too.
And honestly, I think we need to be better about calling people out for disrespectful behavior towards service workers. In general, the worker isn’t a position to say anything (risks their employment), so it’s on us to say something if we are with the person who acted that way.

The rule is an application of my Duck Test: If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck. You can determine a lot about a person by observing their habitual actions. When someone tells you who they are, believe them the first time.
